Where do we begin with last night’s thrilling encounter between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather… This fight offered intrigue, mystery and that what if factor. Fight fans were tuning into see if McGregor could land his famous left hand on Floyd or would Floyd School McGregor….
Conor started the quicker of the two fighters and arguably took the first 3 rounds on the judges cards. He failed to land that magic left on Mayweathers chin though, the signs were that Floyd was taking a few rounds to figure out McGregor and his awkward MMA style of striking.
As the rounds passed Mayweather gradually came out of his shell and started to walk McGregor down. This was clearly all part of his gameplan, let the Irish superstar punch himself out and pounce when he was at his weakest. Conor in the past has had stamina issues in the UFC, most notably in his defeat to Nate Diaz at UFC 196.
After the 4th round Conor had very little success and Mayweather started to dominate the encounter. McGregor would eventually be stopped on his feet in the 10th round, a stoppage he’s put down to his stamina and not the fact he was hurt by Mayweather.
Where now for McGregor?
Well I would expect him to head straight back to the UFC and face Nate Diaz in a trilogy contest at 155lbs. This would certainly close a chapter in Conor’s career.
